Advice from the Vet!

Summer Time Tips

Summer time means warm sunny weather. With warm weather outdoor actives generally increase. This can be true for your pets as well. Here are a few precautions that should be taken to keep your pet happy and healthy during the summer months.

1. Never leave your dog unattended in a car during warm weather. It can literally take just a few moments for the temperature in your car to reach above 100 degrees. This can be a deadly situation.

2. Always make sure fresh water is available to your pet. Pets drink more water in the summer and should have plenty available.

3. For dogs with light color fur or fair skin, sunburn can be a big problem. Sunscreen for dogs is now available. Apply to nose and ears especially to keep sunburns from happening.

4. Avoid heavy exercise during hot, humid days. If exercise is a must, then try to exercise first thing in the morning or later in the evening when it is coolest.

5. Make sure your pet is protected from heartworms. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, so during warm weather it is especially important to protect your pet.

6. With warm weather there is also the need to protect your pet from fleas and ticks. There are many products available. We recommend a topical called Frontline Plus. Ask the veterinarian before applying any flea medication to your pet.

7. Keep a lookout for leakage from vehicles. Antifreeze is especially toxic, and due to the sweet smell, pets will readily ingest it.

8. Grooming is also essential. In many cases, your pet will be much happier for a good haircut during the warm season. Excessive matting and thick fur may retain heat, which could keep your pet from staying cool.
